    Description

Mango honey comes predominantely from mango (Mangifera indica), a tropical tree related to the poison ivy family. Its fleshy, sweet fruit is widely popular nowadays and extensively used in smoothies, sauces and bowls.

Originally from India, the tree started to expand geographically when Emperor Ashoka had mango groves planted alongside his kingdom’s trails for travelers to eat and take. Today, we enjoy several kinds of mango in the Dominican Republic, ranging from the typically local mango de azúcar to more commercial varieties like Kent. Mango de azúcar and banilejo are the most common in our surroundings, where they have multiplied naturally and are not used for commercial purposes.

Mango blooms in tiny white flowers, attracting bees from approximately April until June. In our yards, bees also enjoy the fallen fruit and the pollen. We are working with our neighbors to keep mango trees pesticide-free, since they are such an important source of food for our bees and other pollinators with declining populations, such as bats.
